Ask our Experts: How Can I Prepare My Child for Kindergarten?

Teacher looks at book with young student

Kindergarten truly is a pivotal experience for children and families. While it is a time of big changes, it is also a time of great opportunity. Tempe Elementary School District and our incredible kindergarten team are committed to helping your child succeed, every step of the way.

Here are five tips from our teacher experts that can help prepare your child for kindergarten:

1. Develop routines.

Start establishing routines, such as morning routines for getting ready and bedtime routines, to help the transition into school.”
- Monique Austin Webber, Kindergarten Teacher at Joseph P. Spracale Elementary

The first step to success in kindergarten is setting routines. A smooth morning routine and  established bedtime habits will help your child meet all of their needs so they can be their best during the school day.

2. Read with your child.

“Reading to your child is a great way to prepare them for kindergarten. Listening to read-alouds, talking about the story, and the pictures in the story, really helps to prepare your child to participate in conversations with classmates and their teachers.”
- Felicia Robles, Kindergarten Teacher at Fuller Elementary

Literacy is a big element of kindergarten and the more exposure students have with stories, words, and books, the better! Having these conversations also helps students develop conversation skills that will help them be successful in a classroom setting.

3. Encourage responsibility and independence.

“Teach your child to be responsible for their actions and their things. Work on your child’s independence by having them open their backpack, snacks, and water bottles. They can also practice putting on their own jackets, and tying their shoes.”
- Monique Austin Webber, Kindergarten Teacher at Joseph P. Spracale Elementary

Kindergarten is a leap into independence for children. Although our staff is always there to support students, kindergartners need to learn to do some tasks on their own. Encourage your child to practice tasks such as dressing themselves, opening lunch packages, and using the restroom independently. Fostering this independence will help them be one step ahead when the school year begins.

4. Boost your child’s confidence.

“Build their self-esteem by praising them, and let them know that you can see their progress.”
- Christina Moore, Kindergarten Teacher at Wood Elementary
“Ask your child about school and encourage them to talk about their day by asking positive, open-ended questions.”
- Felicia Robles, Kindergarten Teacher at Fuller Elementary

Kindergarten is a big shift for children and can be overwhelming. They are being exposed to lots of new experiences, environments, and knowledge. Having meaningful conversations and recognizing their growth are great opportunities to build their confidence that can carry over into their academic and social success.

5. Get to know your school community.

“Kindergarten is the most magical year and the foundation of their school career. Stay involved and work together with your child’s teacher. We are here to help and want your child to love school!”
- Monique Austin Webber, Kindergarten Teacher at Joseph P. Spracale Elementary
“We will always be there to help guide and support your child so if they ever need help please let them know that they can always ask their teacher for help.”
- Felicia Robles, Kindergarten Teacher at Fuller Elementary

Getting to know your child’s school and building a relationship with their teacher can help quell nerves and set them up for success. Your child’s teacher is also the best source of information on your child’s specific needs, strengths, and opportunities for growth. Their expertise is priceless when it comes to resources to help your child reach their full potential.
